Boisterous Oyster Playhouse,
Utrecht’s English-language theatre company, will present the one act
play Belle & James as part of the Culturele Zondagen
festivities on Sunday 23 March. The play was written by Alana Gillespie,
PhD researcher at Utrecht University’s Research Institute for History
and Culture (OGC). It is part of De Kleine Parade, the theme of
this month’s Culturele Zondag. Based on historical events, Belle & James is a comic investigation into the relationship between Utrecht’s own Belle van Zuylen and the Scottish writer James Boswell, as seen through the eyes of Voltaire. With a few post-modern twists and physics experiments, the play takes place in Belle’s chambers at Slot Zuylen in 1761, as the notorious rake Boswell pays a possibly amorous visit to the equally notorious, hard-to-handle author and feminist avant-la-lettre, Belle van Zuylen. There are four performances at Slot Zuylen (11.00-11.30, 13.30-14.00, 15.30-16.00, 16.45 -17.15); entrance is free. Special bus transport has been organised from Utrecht Central Station by GVU. The play starts in the bus, so be sure to catch it! Bus leaves at 10.15, 12.45 and 14.45 (from departure point for Bus 13). -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Utrecht’s Engelstalige toneelgezelschap Boisterous Oyster Playhouse presenteert, als onderdeel van de Culturele Zondag van 23 maart, de eenakter Belle & James. Het stuk is geschreven door Alana Gillespie, promovenda bij het OGC, in het kader van De Kleine Parade, het thema van deze Culturele Zondag. Losjes gebaseerd op historische gebeurtenissen werpt Belle & James een komische blik op de relatie tussen Utrechts eigen Belle van Zuylen en de Schotse schrijver James Boswell, gezien door de ogen van Voltaire. Het stuk, vol post-moderne twists en natuurkundige experimenten, is gesitueerd in Belles kamers in Slot Zuylen in 1761. We zien de beruchte losbol Boswell een poging wagen de even beruchte, niet zonder handschoenen aan te pakken feministe avant-la-lettre Belle van Zuylen voor zich te winnen. De toegang is 100% gratis en er zullen vier voorstellingen worden gegeven te Slot Zuylen (11.00-11.30, 13.30-14.00, 15.30-16.00 en 16.45-17.15). Er zal om 10.15, 12.45 en 14.45 een GVU-bus vertrekken vanaf het Centraal Station (vertrekhalte bus 13) naar Slot Zuylen. Het stuk begint al in de bus dus zorg dat je er op tijd bij bent!
